Audiences will be treated to one of the most epic and adored musical traditions in the orchestral repertoire, performed exactly as Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky intended - with real live cannons! The favorite festival spectacle, The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49, more commonly known as the 1812 Overture, is captivating, mesmerizing, glorious, wonderful, and rousing - from the idyllic opening notes to the adrenalin-explosion and brass fanfares at the conclusion. The concert overture in E-flat major commemorates Russia’s successful defense against the French invasion of the country by Napoleon in 1812. Drenched in a proud nationalist sentiment, the 1812 Overture represents the invading French armies with fragments of the Marseillaise, over which the Russian Orthodox chant “Save Us, Oh Lord” and the Imperial anthem ultimately triumph.
The award-winning, illustrious conductor Steven Jarvi, praised for his uncommonly expressive and detailed performances, will also be heading up the performance of Tchaikovsky’s timeless and adored Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23, with one of the world’s greatest musical prodigies, the award-winning Aristo Sham, as soloist. From the powerful opening chords to the triumphant conclusion, the piano concerto embodies the essence of passion and drama and is guaranteed to blow the audience away.
Audiences will also be treated to the well-known and beloved Overture from Mikhail Glinka’s opera, “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, based on the popular narrative poem of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. The amazing Utah Symphony will also perform the concert suite from Tchaikovsky's most beloved, heartbreaking, and magical ballet, “Swan Lake”. This particular work, with its imaginative fantasy elements and melodic turn of phrase, transformed the art of composing ballet music into a high calling.
