And with Common up next to the stage, on tour with Pete Rock this summer for select shows throughout the states, the boys will go to places like DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids, San Jose Jazz Festival, The Intersection Festival in St.Louis, and of course - right here at Deer Valley for all of us rap heads.
Common is a staple of the midwestern underground rap scene - and if anyone mentions his name as one of their top favs from the early 2000s scene, then you know they have great music taste and that you can trust their opinion. Born in Chicago in the 70s, Common came up with the Indie rap label Relativity Records right when he turned 20 - after making it big in his high school years and opening up for groups like N.W.A. and Big Daddy Kane before he could even legally drink. Originally with the stage name Common Sense, the emcee found success and critical acclaim after his first album Resurrection debuted in 1994. He became a young legend in the underground rap scene, and began to brush shoulders with other Chicago legends like Kanye West at the time, too. He has since collaborated with Lauryn Hill, Black Thought, John Legend, and Kanye - to name a few. He has won three GRAMMYs and an Oscar, and is seen as one of the most successful Chicago rappers to ever come out of the city. His summer concert series with Pete Rock, the Chicago producer and rapper who has been a frequent collaborator with Common since back in the day, serves as a reminder that conscious rap is still king in this day and age, and a chance for all the early 2000s fans of the genre to reminisce about the good ‘ole days - AKA, what it was like before mumble rap came along.
You won’t want to miss this one, y’all! Grab your tickets today, and we’ll see you soon - right here at the Deer Valley Music Fest!
